Introduction
State of Statelessness (2024) is a compilation of four short films directed by Tibetans in exile across India, the USA, and Vietnam. The film delves into profound themes of statelessness and migration, capturing the lived realities of the Tibetan diaspora.
In one story, a Tibetan father in Vietnam tells his young daughter how the Mekong River begins in their homeland and flows into the sea of their new country.
Another segment follows two sisters reunited by their mother’s cremation after years apart, only to find themselves entangled in the complexities of their long separation.
The third film follows Sonam, who is recovering from a family tragedy and is forced to confront the fragility of life when an old classmate from the US visits.
In the final story, a son returns to his father’s former home in Dharamsala, catching a glimpse of his own past and discovering a secret that shakes his understanding of his heritage and identity.
