Public Opinion and the Politics of Refugee Protection in Asia(亞洲難民保護的民意與政治)

Email: k.kironska@gmail.com
Refugee protection depends not only on international norms and state institutions but also on how refugees and asylum seekers are perceived by host societies. Public attitudes can enable humanitarian policies, but they can also reinforce exclusion, securitization, and political reluctance to establish formal protection mechanisms. This research examines public opinion toward refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless populations in East and South Asia. It focuses particularly on societies that have not adopted comprehensive refugee legislation, as well as on countries hosting politically contested refugee populations. Using public opinion surveys and qualitative analysis, the research investigates how nationalism, political identity, religion, media narratives, and perceptions of security shape attitudes toward refugees and refugee protection.
